The weather was dreadful for Sunday's Cinco de Mayo parade, but the spirit of celebration was strong - even defiant."I know they canceled in Flushing, but we're still here!" said Adan Gomez, referring to similar Cinco de Mayo events that were nixed in Queens in response to swine flu fears.

"I am happy, happy!" said Gomez, 23, dressed as an Aztec warrior under a blue plastic poncho as the rain poured down on the Central Park West parade, which started an hour behind schedule.

The threat of germs appeared to be far from the minds of the hundreds of participants who danced in the streets in colorful skirts, feathered headdresses and animal costumes - and there were no protective face masks in sight.

"We thought they were going to cancel it, but it turns out it was fine," said Maria Tellez, 25, who traveled from Riverhead, L.I., with her three kids to watch her saxophone-playing husband march.

In her new book, "The G-Free Diet: A Gluten Survival Guide," Hasselbeck tells her personal story and tells you how you can start living a gluten-free life.
My G- Free Journey
I learned about gluten the hard way. I wrote this book so you don't have to. Most people with celiac disease, like me, have a story to tell. My hope is that in reading mine, and the pages that follow, you will be able to begin your journey to a better body and a better self—without all the heartache (and bellyache!) that I endured for far too long.I grew up in an Italian-American neighborhood in Providence, Rhode Island. There wasn't a single holiday that did not feature "Mama's" (my grandmother's) famous baked penne along with a thirty-inch loaf of fresh Italian bread. After dessert, my whole family would even sit around dunking any remaining bread into our coffee. My cousins and I would fight over who got the "end" of each loaf. I remember watching Mama slice into the loaf, waiting to see if it was my "day" or not. The smell of more toasted Italian bread and butter would wake me up the next morning.

MEXICO CITY (AP) There are nearly 1,000 confirmed cases of swine flu worldwide. The acting head of the CDC says the virus appears to be spreading as easily as regular winter flu. But Dr.
Richard Besser says it doesn't have some of the characteristics of more severe flus. Still he cautions that "doesn't mean we're out of the woods yet."
NEW YORK (AP) New York health officials are reporting two cases of raccoon roundworm. That's a disease so rare there are fewer than 30 cases reported in medical literature. A teen lost sight in one eye and a baby is brain-damaged from the disease. It's transmitted through contact with raccoon feces.
